Sony has signaled what could be the final end of the venerable floppy disk by 2011.
I went floppy free about 3 years ago. For awhile I was clinging to the old tech, like a tiny little idiot but with USB drives being so superior in every way. I finally cast off my remaining floppies to the garbage realm and surged forward to embrace my new USB storage capacities. I still recall when the 5¼-inch floppy disk drive faded into to history. I held onto those black floppy dinosaurs for several years, long after the supporting disk drive had vanished from the house, just because I might need to reclaim something on that particular floppy disk. Then one day I realized, that silly black beast contained nothing that I could live without and away it went to join its friends in the garbage land.
I always find it difficult to give up my old tech. I generally have invested a lot of money and time into it. Those 5¼-inch floppy disk's contained all my early Apple programming attempts. 5 years ago I dumped my portable CD player at the thrift store. There was nothing wrong with it, I just grew weary of lugging his ample body around. Purchased in the 90's it was my pride and joy. For 100 dollars I became queen of the portable music biz. Even after purchasing the portable CD player, I found it hard to give up my Walkman, a festive pink one, but I finally accomplished this task a number of years later, while in a process of a move. Sometimes, things getting broken while moving is a good thing!
Now my little pink i-pod and I are bestest friends. I do realize, that sometime in 2015, after they put the implant in my skull so I can stream music right into my brain cortex, I will stilll carry my little pink i-pod with me for a few more years, like a security blanket. Nicky will look at me and say "Mommy, you are so old school!" This is of course, before he finds his fathers ancient modem hiding in the store room, I think it is a modem.
Goodbye floppy! May you fade into history with a minimal whimper, cuz I am tired of fixing your bad sectors.
