I love it when history repeats itself over and over again. Most recently Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community is caught up in a sexual abuse case. A schoolgirl has come forward to report that her spiritual adviser's sexual abuse. Naturally the community has rallied behind her spiritual adviser and is calling her a slut and a troublemaker and are busy threatening her family and spitting on the street. The accused has pleaded not-guilty and Hasidic newspapers have proclaimed his innocence and begged the community for support. For this community to deny a pedophile in their midst is an act of stupidity. Some religious community seem to thrive on ignorance and denial. Heinous crimes have been done under the banner of religion, this current episode is nothing unusual. To come from such an environment and step out to say what has happened, this schoolgirl has more power in her soul then the entire Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish. For in their community "victims are rarely believed and abusers aren’t punished — in part because the word of an elder is respected over the word of a child, victims and advocates say."
